Twitter is Down (No, it’s Not Just You)

If you’re having trouble accessing Twitter today and wondering, “Is it Twitter or am I doing something wrong?” you can rest assured it’s not you. For the second time in two months (the first time happened in June), Twitter is down. The difficulty is happening on the Web, iPhone and iPad apps and Twitter’s mobile website. As of now, Twitter reports that they are aware of the problem and are working on it. Specifically, they have reported, “We’re aware of the issue and are looking into it. Will let you know when we have an update.”

Since site like Twitter typically serve more than 500 million users, downtime can equal disaster for both Twitter-ers and the social platform itself. The last time Twitter crashed, they blamed it on a “cascaded bug”, which is essentially a problem that is not due to a specific software element, and so the effect of the bug “cascades” into other elements, too.

Users can keep abreast of the problem by checking on Twitter’s developer blog status. Currently, the page shows that all elements of Twitter’s capabilities, with the exception of “userstream” are experiencing service disruption” or “performance issues.”
It is interesting that this Twitter breakdown happens simultaneously with Google’s similar crash: Googlettalk experienced a worldwide outage for most of today and while most of the problems are now being resolves, many are still without the service.
