Samsung takes cue from Adele, prepares to launch flip phone

When she used a flip phone in her “Hello” video, Adele may have actually been onto something. As it turns out, flip phones are not entirely out of fashion; in fact, Samsung is working on a model with very interesting specifications.

According to Sammobile, Samsung’s upcoming flip phone will likely be called SM-W2016, and it will come with two 3.9-inch, 1280×768 pixel displays — each on one side of the phone’s cover. On the lower part of the phone you’ll find a numeric keypad which, if you still remember how to use it, will make you feel like you’re in the ’90s again.

The Android 5.1.1 device will also have an octa-core Exynos 7420 processor, 3GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, a 16-megapixel primary camera and a 5-megapixel secondary one. Not bad for an archaically designed gadget, right?

In fact, the phone’s design is not as passé as you might think. Samsung actually released a flip phone — though only in Korea — in July this year, but that one was a low-end device. Not only does the new one have premium specs, but — based on the photos from China’s regulatory agency TENAA — it also looks like a clamshell variant of Samsung Galaxy S6.

There’s no word on when the Samsung SM-W2016 will be available or where, but we suspect we won’t see it in the U.S. or Europe.
